ANSO 1.2MW Rooftop PV Project for Botswana Textile Factory

News2026-05-20

Location: Botswana

System Size: 1.2MW On-grid Rooftop PV System

Application: Commercial & Industrial -Textile Manufacturing

Background

A local textile factory in Botswana has long been troubled by unstable public grid supply and continuous electricity tariff hikes. The plant previously relied on 6 diesel generators to make up power shortages. High fuel consumption and frequent maintenance of diesel units, together with soaring utility bills, have placed a heavy financial burden on daily operation.

To optimize energy costs and hedge against upcoming power price increases, the factory cooperated with ANSO to deploy a customized 1.2MWp on-grid rooftop solar system. The project also reserved dedicated maintenance walkways on the roof to support long-term safe operation and routine upkeep.

The Challenge

  • Unreliable grid power - disrupts continuous manufacturing operations.
  • Soaring electricity tariffs – Botswana power utility announced a 40% tariff increase for medium & large commercial users starting this July.
  • Expensive diesel generation – 6 running generators bring high fuel and maintenance costs.
  • Compressed profit margins – rising grid and diesel costs keep eroding business profitability.

The Solution

To address these challenges, ANSO team engineered a fully customized, high-efficiency solar solution tailored to the factory’s unique operational schedule.

  • Maximizing Roof Utilization: ANSO designed optimized rooftop PV layouts to fully leverage the available space on the metal roof, ensuring maximum installed capacity and optimal power generation output.
  • O&M Friendly Infrastructure: To facilitate seamless, long-term system upkeep, dedicated maintenance walkways were integrated into the design. This allows technicians to clean and inspect the system safely, protecting the modules from accidental damage and ensuring optimal performance for decades.
  • Battery-Free On-Grid Smart Design: Since the factory only operates in daytime hours, a pure on-grid solution was adopted without battery energy storage. This design greatly reduces the client’s upfront CAPEX and shortens the investment payback period to maximize ROI.

Project Results

Botswana enjoys abundant solar resources with an average peak sunshine duration of 6.5 hours per day. The 1.2MWp solar system generates 6,500 kWh of clean electricity daily.

By replacing grid and diesel power with solar energy during peak production hours, the factory achieves remarkable cost savings and operational benefits:

  • Substantial Energy Cost Cut

The system saves around 245,485 BWP (approx. 17,350 USD) on monthly electricity expenses.Calculation: 6,500 kWh x 1.2589 BWP/kWh x 30 days.

  • Effective Tariff Risk Hedging

Completed right before the 40% commercial tariff hike, the project effectively shields the factory from sharp electricity price inflation and long-term cost volatility.

  • Enhanced Operational Independence

Reliance on both the public power grid and 6 diesel backup generators is greatly reduced, cutting ongoing fuel cost and routine maintenance expenditure.
